Understanding the MOLE REMOVAL & SKIN LESION REMOVAL

Edgbaston Wellness Mole Removing

Moles are a common type of skin growth. Moles appear as small darkly pigmented spots. They are mostly non-cancerous and benign but can be borderline cancerous or cancerous

Moles are round to oval, brown to tan or black in colour. They can be blue or pink too. Texture-wise, moles can be smooth or wrinkled. They are either flat or raised. Few have hair growing out of them too. Moles are less than 1/4 inch in diameter.

Moles and skin lesions can be unsightly, but their removal for cosmetic reasons is not funded by NHS. We will carry out the necessary examination to establish the suitability of removal and the type of procedure necessary.

The types of treatments include partial and complete removal, using a number of techniques, such as freezing off with liquid nitrogen, curettage and complete surgical removal followed by stitches.

When to Worry About a Mole

If you notice such changes, make sure to book an appointment with our experts.

If a mole appears to be asymmetrical

If a mole has an irregular border

If a mole is larger than 1/4 inch in diameter

If a mole has different, changing or uneven colour

If the mole is evolving in shape, size, colour, height

If the mole develops new symptoms like itching or bleeding

All you need to know about Mole removal

You may have other questions about the procedure that may not have been answered yet. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding mole removal.

Why is it important to get the mole checked?

Moles can be pre-cancerous or cancerous. It is better to get it checked asap and quickly removed to prevent the spread and dreadful outcomes.

How to monitor mole?

Notice your mole every day, try taking photographs to compare them with each other and notice any changes.

Which anaesthesia is used for mole removal?

Local anesthesia is enough for minor surgery of mole removal.

Does a mole removal leave a scar?

Scarring depends on the size of the mole and the procedure being used to remove it. Check with your doctor for more details.

When to see a doctor if I’m worried about a mole?

The rule is ABCD. When a mole is asymmetrical, non-defined borders, change of colour and large in diameter.

How to distinguish between a mole and insect bites?

A mole is brown and fleshy. An insect bite is red and comes up quickly and also goes away as quickly as it came, whereas a mole stays around and doesn't disappear by itself.

How long does it take to heal from a mole removal surgery?

Recovery with moles is rapid. There is not much after care. You can resume your work right after your surgical procedure.

Various Techniques For Mole Removal

Moles are removed mostly for aesthetic reasons. But they can also be erased to prevent the spread of cancerous and precancerous lesions.

Cautery

For benign and non-cancerous moles, cautery is used, it safely burns the mole from the skin.

Shaving

Shaving is a simple procedure in which a scalpel is used to remove the mole. The area may be pink after shaving. No stitches are required for this procedure.

Laser

Bursts of light radiation are used to destroy the mole tissue. It may require 2-3 sessions.

Cryosurgery

Other than cautery, cryosurgery is used, in which the mole is frozen, and it falls off. Your doctor will use liquid nitrogen to freeze it off. You may end up with a small blister on your skin where the mole was.

Moh’s surgery

For cancerous moles, Moh’s surgery is used. During Moh’s surgery, thin layers of cancer containing cells are gradually removed and examined until only cancer-free cells persist. The aim is to remove maximum cancerous cells with minimal damage to surrounding tissue.

Usage of Moh’s Surgery

Moh’s surgery is used for the treatment of common skin cancers like:

Basal cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma

Some melanomas

Moh’s surgery is useful for:

Skin cancers that are large and aggressive or with a high risk of recurrence

Cancers over the areas where maximum healthy tissue is to be preserved like around eyes, ear, nose etc.

Moles that appear to have non defined border

HOME CARE AFTER THE MOLE REMOVAL SURGERY

After the surgery, keep the area clean and keep a layer of petrolatum (Vaseline) over it at all times with a bandage

Clean the wound every day once or twice depending on your doctor’s advice with clear water or hydrogen peroxide

Keep doing these steps until the wound has healed and don't keep it open or use Vitamin E to the wound as it delays healing

Preparation for the Mole Removal

Your surgeon may ask you for the following to prepare you in the best possible way for the procedure:

Stop taking certain medications

Let us know of any medications or supplements you're taking, including any blood-thinning medications. Some supplements may affect your chances of bleeding after surgery, so make sure your surgeon knows about those, too. Continue taking any prescription medications as instructed unless your surgeon tells you otherwise.

Clear your schedule for the day

It's not possible to predict how long Moh's surgery will take. For most people, the procedure takes less than four hours. But your surgeon may advise you to plan as though surgery will take all day, since there's a very small chance it could take that long. Any other surgical method is less time-consuming.

WEAR EASY AND COMFORTABLE CLOTHING

Wear comfortable, casual clothes. Dress in layers, so you can easily adapt to the temperature of the room if the room is warm or cold.

Expect some waiting time

Bring something to help pass the time during your visit. Plan properly by bringing a book, magazine, or other activity.

Follow Up After the Mole Removal

Edgbaston Wellness Moles Removal

Mole removal means removing the mole from the skin completely with minimal scarring

The procedure is painless by the use of a local anaesthetic and recovery requires no time. It is usually unnecessary after a mole removal procedure to follow up, but it varies with the type and size of a mole.

The Doctor may call you after the pathological assessment of the mole. You might be called to inform if there is something unusual, followed by a full body examination.

If the sutural material that was used is non-dissolvable, you will be called for suture removal. If on the face, removal is four to seven days later. If elsewhere, it varies from eight to twenty-one days.

When To Visit a Doctor After Your Surgery

If you notice any one of the following, contact our experts as soon as possible:

Excessive discharge, bleeding or foul-smelling discharge from the site

Fever of about 100F in adults and 101F in children

Severe pain that does not go away from painkillers

Excessive bleeding (ice or pressure on the wound can be applied)

Prevention for moles

Use sunscreen

Apply sunscreen generously 30 mins before heading out in the sun. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Practice reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours for maximum protection

Avoid peak sunlight times

Try keeping inside in the peak sun hours to prevent maximum damage. Search up the maximum sunlight hours depending on where you live.

Covering up

Make a habit to wear fully covering clothes. Clothes with full sleeves, hats or caps and sunglasses help protect against sun damage.

Avoidance of lamps

Some tanning lamps give out UV rays. Get rid of them to keep yourself protected.

Very friendly staff with a wide range and treatments, and the knowledge of how to apply those treatments. Very relaxed atmosphere, where you can discuss (without pressure) what you would like to enhance, about the way you look. They've altered my life and how I feel about myself in a very short time. I had no idea that I could alter (without surgery) my physical shape. This seemed to happen almost magically while we were chatting through the totally painless procedure.I'm very happy that I found you guys at Medispa, many thanks

I have been visiting EF Medispa, Edgbaston for a few months now and I can honestly say it has so far been a very positive experience. The team are so friendly and welcoming, you are always greeted with big warm smiles. I initially had my consultation with Sarah, who was lovely and very knowledgeable. She explained the whole procedure to me before treatments commenced. I also cannot speak highly enough of Kelly who has been carrying out my treatments. She always makes me feel at ease, from the very start she has walked me through the process of the whole procedure, answers all my questions and tells me what the benefits are. I would highly recommend coming to EF Medispa, Edgbaston, it is a spotless and pristine clinic and not only that, you will be well looked after by all the professional, friendly and welcoming staff from the moment you walk through the door.
