Menopause is a natural condition that all women experience as part of ageing. As life expectancy is on the increase, women can now spend up to a third of their lifespan menopausal and so managing the menopause symptoms is becoming a vital part of women’s health and wellbeing.
An NHS appointment with your GP may not be long enough to thoroughly discuss your symptoms and how they impact on the quality of your day to day life and relationships.
Here at Edgbaston Wellness, we believe every woman deserves quality time with an expert in women’s health to explore her symptoms and find a solution carefully tailored to her needs.
Our Dr Kiran Penumaka is an experienced practising GP, specialising in gynaecology and women’s health. She is committed to carefully exploring your options, thoroughly assessing your symptoms and examining your blood results to pinpoint the exact hormonal imbalance and the solution that is right for you.
She will help you choose the most effective treatment to greatly improve your quality of life – whether it is conventional HRT, bio-identical HRT or even an increase in progesterone with a coil – we can meet all your needs in our Women’s Health clinic.
Every woman’s experience of menopause is different – some experience minimal discomfort, and some find their lives greatly affected by a wide range of symptoms:
- Hot flushes
- Night sweats
- Joint pain and stiffness
- Dry, itchy skin and hair
- Dyspareunia – pain during intercourse
- Fractured Sleep
- Mood swings
- Irritability and anxiety
- Lack of concentration
- Vaginal dryness and laxity
- Itchy skin
- Weight gain
- Urinary incontinence
- Recurrent Urine infections ( UTI)
- Irregular periods
A balanced endocrine system is key to our wellbeing, as hormones regulate every function of our body. Hormonal imbalance brought on by menopause can cause problems described above, as well as fluctuation of blood sugar, loss of motivation, depression, constant fatigue and even panic attacks.
Alongside conventional treatments, we also offer Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), which is found to be highly effective in a lot of menopausal patients.
Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
A bio-identical hormone has identical chemical and molecular structure as the naturally occurring hormone our own bodies produce, including the arrangement of oxygen, hydrogen and carbon atoms.
Consequently the effects of BHRT tend to be more consistent. A synthetic hormone used in traditional HRT has slight structural differences to a hormone produced by the body, which means it can interact with our organism differently and the dosage may require multiple adjustments.
Bio-identical hormones are synthesised from a plant chemical extracted from yams and soy, and are then manufactured into micro powder. It can be prescribed as a topical cream, patch or in a lozenge form.
This treatment is thought to be quite new but has actually been used safely in the UK since 1930’s.
Dr Penumaka will discuss this treatment with you in detail, and make arrangements for it to be prepared by a specialist pharmacy, compounded especially for you.
