Understanding the acne and acne scar treatment

Acne has many causes such as your hormonal levels, genetics, sebum, stress, sleep habits, pregnancy, certain medication and even cosmetics. Therefore, most people will experience acne at some point in their lives, and it is nothing to be ashamed about but can have a negative impact on many lives.
Acne scarring can sometimes develop after acne has healed, especially if you’ve picked or popped your skin. There are some medical conditions that are also related to acne, such as oily skin, Rosacea, Polycystic Ovaries and some Thyroid conditions.
There are many types of acne scars which can be typically shaped as indented marks, raised or red areas which can give a ‘’mottled’’ appearance.
We believe everyone should feel empowered and not reminded of the stigma acne often causes, which is why we offer a range of targeted and highly effective treatments.
Our expert practitioner will be able to give you a thorough skin care analysis and guide you every step of the way with a treatment plan which will help you to feel happy and more confident in your own skin!
Feel confident in your own skin with our targeted treatments
Our cosmetic skin specialists during your consultation will recommend the optimal combination of treatments to manage acne more effectively. Our bespoke acne management skin peels contain active ingredients designed to control excessive oil production, unblock pores and reduce bacterial inflammation.
Depending on the severity of your acne, you may be referred to a consultation with one of our clinical team. This is a prescription-only three-step acne treatment with clinically proven ingredients that penetrate deep into the skin’s layers to tackle acne at the root and control adult acne for a clearer, healthier-looking complexion.
We also commonly treat scars left by acne. The right treatment will depend on how severe your scarring is, and will require a consultation with one of our experts.
The most common scar is called an atrophic scar (this is due to the reduction of collagen in the skin layers, leading to pitting defects). The scar tissue that bulges out is called hypertrophic scar or keloid scar (with excessive protuberant collagen formation leading to prominent scar tissue). The three types of scarring may be icepick (70%), boxcar (15%) and rolling (15%).
Significant scar-associated erythema (SAE), treatment to address the redness can be an initial and dramatic step toward improving the overall appearance of acne scarring. Our state-of-the-art Pulse dye laser (PDL) and other laser and light devices have been used very successfully in treating SAE. We are able to use fillers to fill volume loss in a scar, along with a range of treatments to improve your skin.
All you need to know about Acne scar treatment
You may have other questions about the procedure that may not have been answered yet. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding acne scar treatment.
Acne is caused when your skin’s follicles become blocked. Acne is formed when the skin produces too much sebum and the dead cells in the pores become clogged, not shedding properly. The sebum and dead cells build up and plug the pores which result in blackheads, whiteheads and spots combined with inflammation.
You will be able to have a thorough skin analysis with our expert practitioner, who will be able to advise you on the best treatment plan for your skin and your concerns.
This really depends on your skin type and the treatment course which is best for you. For laser and microneedling, we usually recommend at least a few sessions for maximum results. You will be able to discuss your options and monitor your progress at our Edgbaston Clinic in confidence.
Our specialised facial peels help to control sebum production, unblock pores and reduce inflammation.
The laser helps break up the scar tissue and encourages new healthy skin cells to replace the old scar tissue.
Microneedling is relatively painless and feels like small vibrations on the skin. By creating micro punctures in the skin, more collagen is produced, resulting in smoother, renewed skin.
Our Acne Scar Treatments
Laser Treatments With ClearSkin
Our experienced practitioners use Alma’s ClearSkin to combine a non-ablative laser with simultaneous contact cooling and vacuum technology to treat acne and acne vulgaris safely and effectively.
The cooled glass laser with vacuum treatment addresses all forms of acne vulgaris including papules, pustules and nodules, while also achieving a gentle rejuvenation effect, diminishing the appearance of acne scars by stimulating collagen renewal.
At Edgbaston Wellness & Medispa we use Alma Laser's revolutionary Clearskin Laser as an attachment to the powerful Harmony XL Pro to treat stubborn and severe cases.
The laser system is specially designed to combat all three catalysts, including excess sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Results are long-lasting, and the procedure is virtually pain-free with no need for needles, numbing, gels, or lengthy appointments.
You can come in with troubling pimples and walk out with clean, rapidly-healing skin in less than 30 minutes!
The laser is non-ablative, which means that it heats up the tissue, but does not destroy it. This accurate laser treatment for acne targets the dermal layer under the skin, blood circulation, and cellular renewal. By penetrating under the surface, your skin quickly heals and regenerates the areas that were affected, even though nothing was actually destroyed or hurt in the process.
This treatment may be used in all skin types to achieve clearer and healthier skin. The treatment may vary between 1 to a course of treatments about 2-4 weeks apart to get the maximum longer-term results. The right treatment will depend on how severe your scarring is and will require a consultation with one of our experts.
