Understanding the Flexible cystoscopy

cystoscope

Flexible cystoscopy is a safe and effective procedure to visualize the inside of your bladder. The good thing is, it’s a painless procedure and is not followed by any cuts or scars.

Our urologists pass a telescope, fitted with a light and digital camera, through the urethra into the bladder to visualize its internals. The image from the camera is displayed on a screen. The experts then use it for diagnostic purposes. They may also take small biopsies for further investigations. Moreover, flexible cystoscope can also be used to remove small polyps and stones

The patients are given a local anaesthetic which means they are fully awake but do not feel any pain. The entire procedure lasts only a few minutes and the patients can walk home right after the procedure.

When you should Have a Flexible Cystoscopy

A urologist might want to look inside your bladder if you have:

Regular urinary tract infections

Blood in urine

Pain and discomfort urinating

A highly irritable bladder

If you have these problems, you’ll find an in-depth consultation at our clinic. Our doctors will address all your concerns and arrange a procedure if necessary.

HOW The FLEXIBLE CYSTOSCOPY procedure IS PERFORMED

Prior to the flexible cystoscopy procedure, you may be asked for the following:

Taking Antibiotics

Our doctors might give you certain antibiotics before and after the cystoscopy to rule out any possibility of infection.

Urine Sample

Our doctors can also ask you for a urine sample before cystoscopy. So, it’s important to not empty your bladder until then.

Afterwards, the procedure is done in an outpatient setting, and it usually takes only a few minutes:

  • Anaesthesia

  • Examination

  • Filling

  • Collection

You will be given local anaesthetic

Our urologists will fill your urethra with an anaesthetic gel to make the procedure painless and comfortable. You will be awake during the procedure but will not experience any pain.

COMPLICATIONS OF FLEXIBLE CYSTOSCOPY

Just as the procedure itself is safe and effective, the risk of complications during and after a flexible cystoscopy is very low. Some complications that can be associated with it are:

Infection

Infection can develop due to the introduction of a germ into your body during the procedure. However, such urinary infections account for less than 10% of the cases and can be completely avoided using antibiotic prophylaxis.

Bleeding

Cystoscopy might cause slight bleeding in your urine. The bleeding however is not serious and is rarely seen after the procedure.

Pain

Although the procedure is short and painless, it can lead to pain in the abdomen and induce a burning sensation during urination. Again, the risk for such pain and burning sensation after a cystoscopy is minimal.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A MORE SERIOUS COMPLICATION

However, there might also be signs and symptoms of a more serious complication – you should seek our expert support if you experience the following after your cystoscopy procedure:

Failure to urinate after cystoscopy

Heavy bleeding in urine

Burning sensation while urinating that lasts for more than two days

A high fever (more than 101.4 F)

Abdominal pain and nausea

If you experience any of these symptoms, please reach out to us instantly. We’ll make sure to guide you properly according to the severity of the problem and will prescribe medications, respectively.

All you need to know about flexible cystoscopy

You may have other questions about the procedure that may not have been answered yet. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding flexible cystoscopy.

What is Flexible Cystoscopy?

Flexible cystoscopy is a short minimal-invasive procedure to detect bladder and bladder associated problems. It involves passing a flexible tube (cystoscope) through the urethra into the bladder to visualize its internals. The tube is attached with a camera, the images from which are displayed on a screen. These visuals are used by experts to establish a diagnosis.

When do I need a Flexible Cystoscopy?

A flexible cystoscopy is indicated when you experience problems with your urination process. These may include pain and discomfort while urinating, blood in urine, frequent urinary tract infections and a highly irritable bladder. The underlying cause for these issues can be determined after an in-depth examination of the tract and bladder through cystoscopy.

How long does it take for a flexible cystoscopy?

It is a short procedure that is carried out in the outpatient department. It usually takes only a few minutes (as little as 5 to 10 minutes). A sterile fluid is run through the tube to stretch the bladder to obtain a better view of its lining.

Is flexible cystoscopy safe and reliable?

It is a safe procedure that allows direct inspection of the bladder and its lining epithelium. It is done to diagnose and treat a wide range of bladder problems. Not only that, but it also helps to remove small polyps and stones through the use of dedicated instruments.

What is done in a flexible cystoscopy?

Flexible cystoscopy is a short procedure. First, an anaesthetic jelly is passed into the urethra to make the procedure painless and comfortable. A cystoscope is then inserted through the urethra all the way up to the bladder to examine it. The urologists also pass sterile fluid through the cystoscope into the bladder to stretch it and obtain a better view. The urologists may also take bladder biopsies for any further investigations.

Is flexible cystoscopy painful?

This procedure is a short and safe procedure that is completely painless. It involves administering a local anaesthetic through the urethra which means you are fully awake during the procedure but do not experience any pain. The procedure ensures a fast recovery. Hence, you can resume your activities the very next day of the procedure.

What are the risks of flexible cystoscopy?

It is a safe procedure and the chances of any complications are very low. However, you may get an infection after the procedure. These infections can usually be avoided by antibiotic prophylaxis. Other complications associated with the procedure include bleeding, pain in the abdomen and burning sensation on urination.

If you experience difficulty to urinate, heavy bleeding in urine, a high fever and a burning sensation that lasts for more than two days, you should contact our experts right away.

How long does it take to recover from flexible cystoscopy?

Flexible cystoscopy is a short procedure with instant recovery. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes. You are provided with a pad to prevent your clothing from staining and are allowed to walk home as soon as you urinate after cystoscopy. You can even resume your work the next day.

What Are Your Treatment Options Apart from flexible cystoscopy

Ultrasound scans and urodynamic tests can also be used to detect various problems related to bladder. However, these procedures can only help diagnose certain bladder conditions.

A flexible cystoscopy on the other hand is a minimal-invasive procedure that allows a doctor to directly view the inside of the bladder and detect any issues. It is shorter than a rigid cystoscopy that uses spinal or general anaesthesia and has a longer recovery time.

The experts at our clinic can provide their expert opinions, analyses and carry out required investigations and procedures to help solve all your concerns related with bladder and urination.

Very friendly staff with a wide range and treatments, and the knowledge of how to apply those treatments. Very relaxed atmosphere, where you can discuss (without pressure) what you would like to enhance, about the way you look. They've altered my life and how I feel about myself in a very short time. I had no idea that I could alter (without surgery) my physical shape. This seemed to happen almost magically while we were chatting through the totally painless procedure. I'm very happy that I found you guys at Medispa, many thanks

I have been visiting EF Medispa, Edgbaston for a few months now and I can honestly say it has so far been a very positive experience. The team are so friendly and welcoming, you are always greeted with big warm smiles. I initially had my consultation with Sarah, who was lovely and very knowledgeable. She explained the whole procedure to me before treatments commenced. I also cannot speak highly enough of Kelly who has been carrying out my treatments. She always makes me feel at ease, from the very start she has walked me through the process of the whole procedure, answers all my questions and tells me what the benefits are. I would highly recommend coming to EF Medispa, Edgbaston, it is a spotless and pristine clinic and not only that, you will be well looked after by all the professional, friendly and welcoming staff from the moment you walk through the door.
