How the Circumcision procedure is performed
Preparation: Your baby is comfortably placed on the operating table.
The genital area is carefully cleaned with an antiseptic solution to reduce infection risks.
Anesthesia or Pain Relief: Local anesthesia, like a numbing cream and injection, is administered to ensure your baby's comfort during the procedure.
Plastibell Device Placement: The correct size Plastibell device is delicately positioned over the penis's glans. The foreskin is gently stretched over the ring for a precise fit.A midline incision on the foreskin may be needed.
Trimming Excess Foreskin: Using sterile instruments, the healthcare provider trims any excess foreskin protruding beyond the Plastibell ring.
Securing the Plastibell: Once the excess foreskin is removed, the Plastibell device remains in place, acting as a ligature. A sterile tie is applied around the base to secure it.

Understanding adult Circumcision
![Circumcision Procedure Circumcision Procedure](https://edgbastonwellness.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/circumcision-procedure.jpg)
Circumcision involves surgical removal of the skin on the head of the penis also called as the foreskin. It is usually the babies who undergo circumcision shortly after birth but those who haven’t had one as a baby can have it now at our clinic under best experts in the field.
Although not necessary, it is typically done within two to three days after birth. It’s recommended to have it done as soon as possible to avoid any later risks and complications. For instance, at birth, foreskin is completely adherent to the tip of the penis. It develops and separates over time so that it can be retracted. Sometimes, it fails to separate and remains attached to the penile crown. This condition is called phimosis, and it requires circumcision to correct it.
Most circumcisions are done to effectuate religious obligations. However, science has proven that circumcision rolls in various health benefits, including lowering the risk for urinary tract infections.
How the Circumcision procedure is performed
Initial Assessment:
Consultation: is usually done virtually It usually involves discussion of the reasons for seeking circumcision, medical history, and any concerns or questions.
The Consultant Urological Surgeon will go through the potential risks and benefits of circumcision, as well as alternative treatment options if applicable.
Informed Consent: The patient provides informed consent for the procedure after understanding the information provided.
Preoperative Assessment form is to be completed prior to operation. Deposit to secure the date.
On the day of the Operation:
Preparation Instructions: you will need to fast for 6 hours prior to the operation and to have some painkillers prior to the procedure. The area will need to be shaved.
Confirmation of the Consent:The Consultant Urological Surgeon will go through the potential risks and benefits of circumcision, as well as alternative treatment options if applicable
Examination and discussion of the various types of circumcision.
High Circumcision:
Amount of Foreskin Removed: More of the foreskin is removed, leaving less of the shaft of the penis covered when flaccid.
Exposure of Glans: This results in a larger portion of the glans (head) of the penis being exposed when the penis is not erect.
Reasons: High circumcisions may be preferred for medical reasons, such as phimosis (tight foreskin) or recurrent infections, where more foreskin removal may be necessary.
Low Circumcision:
Amount of Foreskin Removed: Less of the foreskin is removed, leaving more of the shaft of the penis covered when flaccid.
Exposure of Glans: This results in a smaller portion of the glans being exposed when the penis is not erect.
Reasons: Low circumcisions may be chosen for cosmetic reasons or personal preference, where individuals desire to retain more foreskin for a natural appearance.
Standard Circumcision:
Amount of Foreskin Removed: The amount of foreskin removed in a standard circumcision falls between high and low circumcisions.
Exposure of Glans: It results in a moderate exposure of the glans when the penis is not erect.
Reasons: Standard circumcisions are often performed for both medical and cultural/religious reasons. They aim to balance the removal of foreskin necessary for medical indications while preserving enough tissue for aesthetic and functional purposes.
You will be seen by a member of the nursing team and you will change into the hospital gown and have TED stockings to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
Operating Theatre:
Anesthesia: The consultant Urological surgeon will inject local anesthetic to numb the genital area
Surgical Procedure: The surgeon performs the chosen circumcision technique, which may involve the removal of the foreskin using a scalpel to use a Sleeve technique to remove the excess foreskin.
Hemostasis and Closure: Any bleeding is controlled, and the edges of the remaining skin are stitched together if necessary to facilitate healing.
Postoperative Care:
Dressing Application: The circumcision site is dressed with gauze or a bandage to protect it and promote healing. You must avoid disturbing the dressing for at least 48 hours.
You will need to keep the area clean and dry, avoiding strenuous activity, and taking pain medication as needed.
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly to the circumcision site to keep it moisturized and prevent the dressing from sticking. Gently wash the circumcision site with mild soap and warm water daily to keep it clean
Change Dressings: Change the dressing or bandage over the circumcision with a clean one after each shower or as needed to keep the area clean and dry.
Avoid Strenuous Activity: Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for the first few days following circumcision. This helps prevent strain on the surgical site and promotes proper healing.
Pain Management: Take pain medication as prescribed or recommended by your healthcare provider to manage any discomfort or pain after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be sufficient for mild to moderate pain.
Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye on the circumcision site for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus-like discharge. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any signs of infection or if you have concerns about the healing process.
Abstain from Sexual Activity: Refrain from sexual activity, including masturbation and intercourse, until the circumcision site has fully healed.
