MICROSCOPIC VASECTOMY Reversal
In our ever-changing world, our circumstances and personal feelings often change. Even if we underwent a vasectomy with set ideas in mind, it is never too late to turn back time for whatever reason with a simple, non-invasive procedure.
Even though a vasectomy or vasectomy reversal may be seen as "taboo" or slightly uncomfortable subjects to discuss, we are here to put your mind at ease to make the process as comfortable and simple as possible.
Where to start with a VASECTOMY REVERSAL
Undergoing a vasectomy reversal is a totally safe and effective procedure which changes so many lives for the better. Using the latest surgical methods, the procedure is very simple with microsurgery allowing you to return home the same day.
At Edgbaston Wellness & MediSpa you can be assured that you are in safe hands every step of the way with one of our expert practitioners to guide you through each step of the process.
At our clinic we use the latest advanced procedure called the Multilayer Microdot Vasectomy Reversal which has a success rate of over 90% and up to 95% if you had your vasectomy within the last 10 years.
This technique is recognised as the "gold standard" in terms of its effectiveness at restoring fertility in nearly all patients. This highly reliable method was first developed by Professor Goldstein at Cornell University, New York.
When a couple decides to move forward with a family planning program, the next best option to prevent pregnancy, after abstaining from intercourse, is the male vasectomy.
In this procedure, the doctor cuts down the tube (vas deferens) that carries the sperm out of the testicles into the penis. When this connection is cut, all a man's body can ejaculate is semen that does not contain any sperm.
But circumstances change and many people may want to get this vasectomy reversed. For a reversal, a surgeon then rejoins the tubes which leads to a mixing of sperm with the semen again.
This makes you fertile once again. If you are considering such a procedure, there are several ways in which it can be done.
Types of Vasectomy Reversal Surgeries
Vasectomy in itself is just snapping off the tube and tying it up. It can be done under general or local anaesthesia. On the other hand, the reversal of the vasectomy is a bit more complicated
The most common way of a vasectomy reversal is vasovasostomy. In it, the two separated ends of the vas deferens are reconnected under a microscope. A surgeon uses a microsurgical dissolvable stitch and any leftover scar tissue from the vasectomy procedure is removed.
There are three main types of vasectomy reversal procedures:
TRADITIONAL VASECTOMY REVERSAL
In this way of reversal, a single incision is usually made in the centre of the scrotum or two on either side. These incisions are made where there is scar tissue left from the vasectomy. Afterward, the doctor removes the scar tissue and reconnects the tubes.
MICROSURGICAL VASECTOMY REVERSAL
This one is a new procedure in which a surgeon uses a microscope to locate the vasa and ensure an accurate joining of the two ends of the tube. This way has yielded better results compared to the traditional vasectomy reversal procedure that was used before.
Multilayer Microdot Vasectomy Reversal
At Edgbaston Wellness Clinic, the technique we use for vasectomy reversal is the advanced multilayer microsurgical technique. In this method, the surgeon uses very minute 9-0 or 10-0 stitches to connect the vas tubes back together. First, the inner layer of the vas is connected to keep the connection site open. Three or more layers of tissues are used to connect back the tubes, which help in the realignment of the tubes in difficult conditions such as thin tubes.
the Process of Microscopic Vasectomy Reversal
There are several steps in the process of microscopic vasectomy reversal.
In your private consultation, you can discuss your long-term plans, present condition, medical history and any concerns with one of our expert practitioners. With our practitioner's vast expertise, they will put you at ease to guide you through the whole process and what to expect step by step to make it as comfortable as possible. In this consultation, they will advise you on your personal plan - whether you need to undergo further tests or need to share your fertility results. After your thorough consultation and analysis, the doctor will advise whether this is the best option for you.
Making an Appointment for the Surgery
If all is well, you will be asked to book an appointment for the surgery. You will be given some literature about the procedure so you better understand what is happening, and you will be asked to process the financial aspect of the surgery. During your appointment at the surgery, you will be guided through the whole procedure step by step with a practitioner to put your mind at ease. Therefore, leading up to the day, you will be fully prepared and assured, given the best medical advice.
At the beginning of your surgery, your personal practitioner will guide you through each step of the procedure and what each stage entails. You will be given the chance to ask any questions and address any hesitations to put your mind fully at ease. A physical exam will also be performed before undergoing the surgery after written consent is provided. Before the operation, you will be given some medication before being admitted to the operating room for the procedure under local anaesthetic.
During the surgery, the consultant anaesthetist Dr Bala will put the cannula in your veins along with the oxygen. The surgeon will use the operating microscope to reattach the tubes, taking some samples of your sperm and tissue to undergo further tests as required. The total duration of the surgery takes between 3 and 4 hours. At Edgbaston Wellness & Medispa we use the latest microscopic technology to identify the sperm from the testicular end of the vas. The ends of the vas are then joined by using a highly secure anastomosis - a surgical connection between the two structures. The microdot technique then ensures ultimate precision in the procedure for your vasectomy reversal.
Going Home and Recuperating
After the procedure, you will be allowed to go home immediately once you are conscious. We advise you to stay close by for the night if you have to travel long distances. After you reach home, you will have to get complete rest for 7 days, you can start returning to normal activities in the second week. Starting the third week, you can go back to work if it is an office job. After 3-4 weeks, you can start exercise and intercourse once again. Once your results come in, you will be updated and can receive them both by visiting or choosing to get them mailed over. Our doctor can go over the results with you too.
The Follow Up
After 3 months, we recommend a test to analyse your semen levels following the procedure. Returning to your full fertility levels can take between a year and 18 months. We will be able to advise you on your lifestyle habits to help you and your partner boost your fertility levels, giving you the best chance of conceiving. We can address your health, diet and habits together, also perhaps prescribing you with supplements if needed. Furthermore, we will continue to monitor the sperm levels and follow up monthly appointments as required.

SUCCESS RATE OF MICROSCOPIC VASECTOMY REVERSAL PROCEDURE
The success rate of the microscopic reversal procedure is a difficult thing to ascertain. There are many things at play.
Most important is the length of time since the vasectomy was performed. If the reversal is done soon after the vasectomy, there is an increased chance of success.
If the length of time is less than 10 years, there is up to a 95 percent chance of sperm returning.
If the length of the time is 15 years, the chance becomes 70 to 85 percent.
Success rates also depend upon the experience and skill level of the surgeon. This is why getting this procedure done at a top quality facility is paramount.
Many other factors may also affect your overall fertility after you get a vasectomy reversal done. These include:
Age of your partner or surrogate
Their reproductive health
Rare infection of surgical wound
It is recommended that you get an initial semen test once three months have passed since the reversal. At this time, you will expect to see at least a little sperm in the semen sample.
Returning to full fertility can take anywhere from a year to 18 months.
It is important to focus on your health and adopt behaviour that is good for your overall fertility. The doctor may also advise you to get some supplements to help augment the sperm motility.
You will then have semen tests at the third and fourth month to check for sperm counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
You may have other questions about the procedure that may not have been answered yet. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding microscopic vasectomy reversal.
This really depends on the individual, but after your sperm count returns to normal, it usually takes 6 months. For some, it can be as little as two months or as long as 18 months to reach full fertility.
You may experience slight discomfort, pain or bruising. Rarely, you may have a slight infection, but we will be able to advise you of any side effects in person.
Not everyone is a good candidate for vasectomy reversal. For example, if your partner will need to follow through with IVF procedures, it might be better to go through a surgical sperm retrieval than a vasectomy reversal. Other reasons for you to avoid such a procedure may be advanced age, hypertension, or diabetes. These factors can complicate surgical procedures.
Recovery time from such a procedure can vary. Usually, it can take anywhere between a week or two (14 days). The surgeons and doctors recommend that you not lift any heavy thing, exert yourself, or have sexual intercourse during the next 4 weeks.
With any surgery, there is always the risk of minor complications, although we have the best doctors and use the latest advanced procedure. If you notice any pain, redness, blood or pus from the incision area, consult us immediately for our advice. If you experience a loss of feeling or fever, also speak to us or your doctor as soon as possible.
During your initial appointment, you will be consulted about the final price of your own treatment and asked to provide a non-refundable deposit for the surgery. You can then pay upfront or set up a payment plan.
